Description of the Disorders

All impulse-control disorders are characterized by repeated failure to resist an impulse to perform a behavior that is harmful. These disorders typically are characterized by increasing tension or arousal before the harmful behavior is performed, and by feelings of release or pleasure after the act has been completed. Although it may be followed by feelings of guilt and remorse, the behavior itself is usually ego-syntonic.

Although the behaviors associated with the disorders in this section vary considerably, most are found in adolescents and adults and result in significant morbidity and mortality (Grant & Portenza, 2007). Most impulse-control disorders follow a chronic course, but may be episodic and get worse under stress. These disorders are also strongly associated with comorbid diagnoses of OCD, substance-related disorders, and mood disorders (Hollander & Stein, 2006).

Some believe that impulse-control disorders have a common underlying dynamic or cause. Possible explanations for these disorders include a biological cause (neurological predisposition) combined with psychosocial causes (such as dysfunctional role models), exacerbated by environmental stress (Hollander, Baker, Kahn, & Stein, 2006). All these possibilities should be considered in seeking to understand a particular person's impulsive behavior.
